Phillip (20) was riding his trail bike when he collided with another biker going in the opposite direction on a blind corner. He suffered fatal head injuries in the crash and died in hospital several days later. The accident occured on an off-road trail near Alexandra. Both riders knew each other, were experienced and wearing the appropriate equipment but were riding in seperate groups at the time of the accident, Phillip had been an active member of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade and had participated in the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland to raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.
