Kirifi (27), known as Cliff, was serving in Afghanistan when he died in a vehicle accident. A Private in the NZ Army, Cliff's Humvee rolled down a 30 metre cliff off a road in the isolated and mountainous terrain of Burniyan province. He was the gunner and was manning the turret position at that time. Three others travelling in the vehicle were injured but survived the accident. The men had been part of a humanitarian patrol whose mission was to engage with locals and be more visible.
