Former MP, Alamein, will be remembered as the politician who defected from the Alliance Party to become an independent MP in 1997, which initiated the "waka jumping" legislation in the late 1990s which served to tighten the obligations of list MPs to their parties. Despite often being controversial she was dedicated to serving her constituency and worked with programmes to help drug takers and prostitutes, both in Australia and New Zealand.
