NZ Born, UK political cartoonist Les (64) wil be remembered as one of the world's most edgy English-speaking cartoonists. The creative often controversial, Kaiapoi-born, Les did not fit in with conservative New Zealand newspapers of the 60's but when he moved to London he was employed by The Daily Telegraph before joining The Guardian in 1969 when he was only 23. He was the newspaper's youngest-ever cartoonist and stayed for 25 years. In later years he also contributed to several animated feature films including Under Milk Wood and Ivor the Invisible. He also contributed to the TV adaptations of the stories of Beatrix Potter and The Wind in the Willows.He died unexpectedly after a routine operation and is survived by his wife of 32 years.
