Caro's doctor failed to diagnose her breast cancer, despite numerous doctor visits over two years. She complained to the Health and Disability Commissioner about being misdiagnosed and this sparked an inveitigation. She first visited the doctor in 2006 with pain under her right arm which, at that time, was diagnosed as hormones. Returning after noticing a lump on her breast, she was told is was not cancerous and she didn't need to have it removed. Several other visits later, in May 2008, she finally received a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, but by then the cancer had fatally spread to her liver and lungs. At the time of her death the Health and Disability Commissioner had yet to rule on her complaint. She is survived by her 16 year old daughter and 11 year old son.
