Dion (15) tragically died after being hung upside down under a waterfall. His horrific ordeal lasted for three hours after his foot was caught in a narrow chasm, and he hung upside down in a waterfall at Wanaka's Mototapu Gorge as rescuers tried desperately to free him. The accident happened at 6pm, he was freed about 9pm but died of hypothermia hours later in Dunedin Hospital. He was a student at John McGlashan College and was a keen rugby player and representative cross-country champion.
