Sport and exercise science lecturer, Johann (36) was killed while cycling on a busy Auckland road. A vehicle crossed two lanes of traffic to enter a driveway and struck him. Regarded as a "academic superstar" whose career was taking off, Johann was an enthusiastic and talented teacher, passionate about his research and his students. In 2009, he was awarded a Marsden fast-start research grant, one of the most prestigious awards for a young scientist to achieve.
