A grandfather's heroic beach rescue saved his grandson's life but claimed his own. Jackie (55) was fishing on Ninety Mile Beach when he saw his grandson and granddaughter in trouble while swimming. He held his grandson above water, while he stayed underwater, until another rescuer could take the boy to shore. The granddaughter was luckily pulled to safety by another rescuer.
The Bluff is a well-known notoriously dangerous stretch of the beach around 60km north of Ahipara.
