Sir Hek (86) was a world-renowned carver and traditional celestial sailing navigator, having revived traditions that had been lost for almost 400 years. Prime Minister Jacnda Addern referred to him as an "icon". He was knighted in February 2019, ONZM, MBE just a few onths before his death. He joins his wife Ngāhiraka (Hilda) who died 23 years earlier.
