Accomplished journalist and horsewoman, Helen (38), died when her horse fell while attempting to cross the Ruamahanga River, just north of Masterton, At the time the river was both flooded and dirty after a recent downpour in the Tararua Ranges.
Helen had won several Qantas Awards for her journalism efforts whiel working on the Dominion Post and Sunday Star Times. She was working as communications manager for Forest & Bird at the time of the accident.
