It was the morning of Fenn's 17th birthday when he was involved in a fatal road crash. He was on his way to school early that morning to go on a day trip with fellow classmates but, shortly after leaving home, he crossed the centreline and collided head-on with a truck. Fenn had not even opened his birthday presents that morning. The accident was a double tragedy for the family as Fenns' mother died in a similar way ten years earlier.
