In 1953 Sir Edmund and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first climbers to reach the summit of Mt Everest, the world's highest peak. A career of mountaineering and exploring followed including expeditions to both the North and South Poles. Sir Edmund also devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal, founding the Himalayan Trust and building many schools and hospitals in remote Himalayan regions. The Trust continues providing support to the area to this day. Photo Credit: NZPA / Wayne Drought
