Haddon (101) was not only a former National MP but, at the time of his death, was the highest-ranking New Zealand army officer of World War II. He served in the 22nd Battalion and was involved in campaigns in Greece, Crete, Egypt and Italy. Lieutenant Colonel Donald (DSO, MC, ED) was awarded the Military Cross in 1942, the Distinguished Service Order in 1945 and made an Officer of the Legion of Merit by the United States in 1947. He was an MP for Wairarapa from 1963 to 1969.
