William (34) was a passenger on a helicopter which was diverted to rescue people stranded in a bush fire when it crashed into the sea also killing its pilot John de Ridder. The tragedy happened about 10pm after the Karikari Peninsula bush fire had stranded local people on the beach as they ran to avoid the approaching flames. The Squirrel ZK-1MB wreckage was found under seven metres of water the following day. William was a ranger for the Department of Conservation.
