Barrie was the first person to swim across Cook Strait achieving the feat on the 20th November 1962, at the age of 27. The swim which was fromhe North Island to the South Island took him 11 hours and 20 minutes. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer on the Gold Coast, Australia, where he was living. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
