Ralph (70) was Kerikeri's fire chief for 47 years and died following heart surgery at Auckland Hospital. Described as an "outstanding" citizen, he had been a member of the Kerikeri Volunteer Fire Brigade for 50 years. He is remembered for his brave efforts during the 1981 Kerikeri flood and in 1998 was named the Chronicle-Caltex Unsung Hero. He is survived by three children, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
