Alastair (40) was testing his homemade hovercraft when one of the blades sheared off and fatally injured him. The tragedy occured at Muriwai Beach, west of Auckland. Alastair had a PhD in mechanical engineering and was a hovercraft enthusiast, both designing and building his own for several years. He is survived by his wife and three young children.
