Sir Archie (73) was regarded as a gentle peacemaker and prominent Maori leader. He was well regarded throughout the country and many government leaders turned to him for advice in Maori issues. He was chairman of Te Ohu Kaimoana, the Maori Fisheries Trust (2004- 2009) and chairman of the Whanganui River Maori Trust. He also served on the Taumarunui Borough Council and the Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council. In 2003 he was awarded the Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to Maori and in 2009 he was knighted.
