Publican, policeman and rugby stalwart Bill (73) lived his life to the full. He ran Wellington's Rose and Crown pub for 19 years and was renowned for his work within the local community. He joined the police in 1956 and had to assist in the hanging of the last man executed in NZ, Walter James (Jim) Bolton, During the 1960's he was involved in two shootings after which he wrote a report which led to the founding of the armed offenders squad. Bill also belonged to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame, the Halberg Trust, the Wellington Rugby Union and Athletics Wellington.In 2000 he was awarded Rotary International's highest award and in 2008 and made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008. He is survived by two children. A funeral service will be at the Wellington Football Club, Hataitai Park on Friday 29th January 2010 at 2pm.
