John was piloting his helicopter to rescue people stranded in a bush fire when it crashed into the sea also killing Department of Conservation ranger William Mcrae. The tragedy happened about 10pm after the Karikari Peninsula bush fire had stranded local people on the beach they fled to to avoid the approaching flames. The Squireel ZK-1MB wreckage was found under seven metres of water the following day.
